The Art of Walking in Hyde Park
A Walk in the Park is a series of artworks made as a result of twelve walking experiments in Hyde Park, Sydney, NSW. Inspired by Guy DeBord’s theories of the dérive (drift), the situation and détournment (“…diversion, rerouting, corruption, hijacking.”) and 'Walking Propositions' I devised ‘playful’ and intentional walking experiences in Hyde Park in order to explore the physical structures and ambiances of the park. The word play is used in the spirit of DeBord’s definition of a way of being that is beyond ‘imposed work and passive leisure’ that facilitates ‘creative autonomy.’ The central purpose of these walks was (and is) to take the time to discover (re-discover) this area of land, imagine what it used to be like and what it might be like in the future.
