Streetlines

archival photographs, dimensions variable, 2015

Street-lines are the calligraphic markings made by those repairing the cracks in the streets and roads by painting them with an asphalt road sealant. These lines cover the streets and roads of Western New York State where there are extreme weather conditions and temperatures. The cracks in the road are made by meteorological factors and the weight of the constant flow of traffic. The dark lines covering the cracks are a quick, temporary system of repair. The process of manipulating the original photographs of the streets and redrawing the lines of sealant highlights the unexpected beauty of these drawings.
